Tutorial 2: Sports Discipline & Disputes
Tutorial Overview
This tutorial explores the governance structures of sporting organisations and examines the principles of natural justice that underpin decision-making within sport. You'll work through practical scenarios involving disciplinary processes and learn when courts will intervene to review sporting decisions.
Through interactive case work and group discussion, you'll develop a deeper understanding of how sporting bodies exercise authority, what legal constraints they operate under, and how athletes can challenge decisions they believe to be unfair or unlawful. This is foundational material for understanding the balance between autonomy for sporting organisations and the rule of law.

Connection to Course
This tutorial builds directly on the introductory session and the lectures in Module 1. The principles of governance and natural justice you learn here form the foundation for understanding how sport is regulated at every level. You'll apply these concepts again when examining restraint of trade in Tutorial 3 and disciplinary proceedings in Tutorial 4.
Pay particular attention to the distinction between contractual and administrative law remedies — this distinction will be crucial for your assessment work.
