Tutorial 4: Clean Sport & Corruption
Tutorial Overview
This tutorial examines anti-doping regulation through real-world case studies and applies the WADA Code framework to practical scenarios. You'll work through the technical elements of an anti-doping violation, explore the available sanctions, and critically analyse the tension between strict liability regimes and athlete rights.
By engaging with actual cases and hypothetical disciplinary scenarios, you'll develop a nuanced understanding of how anti-doping law operates in practice and the challenging policy questions it raises around fairness, proportionality, and the protection of sporting integrity.

Connection to Course
This tutorial introduces the module on sports integrity and regulation. The procedural fairness principles you encountered in Tutorial 2 apply directly to anti-doping proceedings, and you'll see them tested in real disciplinary contexts. The evidentiary and burden of proof questions you'll explore connect to the broader theme of how sport balances athlete protection with the need to maintain competitive integrity.
The course then shifts to the commercial side of sport in Tutorials 5 and 6 (Module 5), where you'll see how the regulatory and integrity frameworks you've studied intersect with the commercial interests that increasingly shape modern professional sport.
